Differentiated Instruction Take Away Learning

Karolyn Ahern--School Librarian, School Library Media Specialist and Teacher Librarian at the Shelburne Community School in Shelburne, Vermont--summarizes and shares her lessons learned after a 3-year, school-wide focus on Differentiated Instruction.

Differentiated Instruction Take Away Learning

"All teachers at Shelburne participated in various embedded professional development activities with (DI consultant) Bill Rich during the past 3 years. Small cohort groups were formed to work with Bill, in order to design differentiated units of instruction that can be shared among our staff. I have recently started to create "Knowledge Building Centers" for these units so that we can collaborate and share ideas for differentiation."

"In my role as an LMS I found that in order to ensure the impact of the library media program on student learning, I must engage in practices founded on collaborative, meaningful, differentiated learning experiences that support curriculum in our information and technology rich environment for all students. In terms of information literacy skills instruction, we set the bar of achievement high for all learners but provide many ways for all students to meet the objectives."

Karolyn Ahern holds an MILS from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
