Welcome to UVa!

We are excited about our upcoming Best Practices Institute and are looking forward to connecting with you!

In the afternoon workshops participants will have the opportunity to apply the principles of differentiation to their own lessons. Please bring something from your curriculum -- a set of standards, a unit, a lesson -- to make this work more relevant to your classroom.

We have blocked out hotel rooms that will hold special rates until one month prior to the conference. Please feel free to contact us if you have further questions [email protected].

LOCATION & PARKING

PARKING:

Parking anywhere near to the University of Virginia can be quite a challenge. If you are staying in one of the conference hotels, it is best to leave your car in those parking facilities and walk the 2 blocks (or take the UVA bus if you are staying at the Cavalier Inn/Best Western) to the Jordan Hall Conference Center. The video below shows how quick the walk is from the Hampton or Hilton Garden Inn on Main Street.

The following garages offer alternate parking options:

Water Street Parking Garage

  • Take the free Trolley to Jordan Hall Conference Center. The Trolley stop is located on Water Street, just behind the Bank of America ($2/hour).

Central Grounds Parking

  • Hop on the UVa bus Green Route at the stop located across Emmet Street in front of the Curry School parking lot ($2/hour).

Corner Parking Lot

  • Another parking option is walking distance and on "the Corner," the section of University Ave with a string of shops and restaurants. It is a cash-only lot and was made infamous in a documentary made about its staff. ($2/hour)

CONFERENCE DOCS

Hand-Outs

Powerpoints and handouts from most presenters will be posted on a UVa Collab website. You will receive an email notification from collab with personalized login instructions. Participants will receive a hardcopy of Carol's powerpoint at registration.

THURSDAY MORNING

CHECK IN:

  • 7:15 a.m. A reception desk sits outside the auditorium where you'll receive a namebadge, hard copy of session descriptions.

INSTITUTE BEGINS:

  • 8:00 a.m. Carol Tomlinson will open the morning session promptly at 8 a.m. in the auditorium.

WHAT TO BRING

Your Curriculum

Afternoon sessions provide opportunities to connect your learning to your lessons, standards or learning goals. Be sure to bring an example of something that you'd like to work with!

Computers or Tablets

Wireless internet access is available in Jordan Hall. You will receive a wireless passcode upon check-in. We will provide a hard copy of Carol's powerpoint for taking notes.

A Sweater or Hoodie!

The temperature in the auditorium is finicky, as is the Spring weather in C'Ville. Dress in layers and be ready to peel them off and on. An umbrella can't hurt either since you will most likely be walking to the site.

FOOD

BREAKFAST

We will provide coffee, tea, and a hearty breakfast prior to the beginning of sessions each morning.

LUNCH

A catered, buffet-style lunch is included in your registration fees. We try to anticipate special food considerations and provide vegetarian options alongside the main dish. If you have medical or religious food restrictions, please contact us at [email protected]

SNACKS

Sweet afternoon "pick-me-up" snacks will also be provided. These tend to be little carb-heavy. Consider bringing something along if sweets aren't your afternoon preference.

DINNER

C'Ville has a lot of yummy restaurants. Mas to Millers is a great resource for restaurant advice, both walking distance and around town.
